A Coward Coupling: Family Album & Hands Across the Sea
A double-bill of two madcap and riotously funny Noël Coward short comedies.
Family Album – Just back from their father's funeral, the Featherway children cannot pull long faces nor feign regret. The last one to break into laughter is pious Lavinia, father's companion until his death.
Hands Across the Sea - Lady Gilpin (Piggie) is so busy with social duties and gossip that she has no time for coherent thinking. She is set aflutter when her drawing room is suddenly filled with her husband's naval conferees, blueprint delivery girls and Mr. and Mrs. Wadhurst from the Far East.
Rumors
At a large, tastefully-appointed Sneden's Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself….
Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room, and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken, and wife, Chris, must get "the story" straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and mis-communications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.
Expect slamming of doors and silliness in abundance!
Apologia
Apologia is a witty, passionate play which explores family relationships and responsibilities. Kristin Miller is a matriarch and eminent art historian whose birthday celebrations highlight the cracks in her relationship with her sons and their partners. As the evening continues this raises questions about the sacrifices she has made and about the price paid by those closest to her.
Blighty, Broadway and Beyond!
Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence were one of the most successful creative partnerships throughout the 30s and 40s. He was the epitome of the witty and erudite English gent and she was a shining and talented actress, accomplished in both comedy and drama.
Of course, they're both dead now. And are currently languishing in Purgatory. God can't decide whether they deserve Heaven or Hell so it's up to the audience to vote and tell them where they're going (after they've been entertained by them both of course - they really do have to sing for their supper!) .
With sparkling wit, laugh out loud comedy and some of the most beautiful songs of the twentieth century, spend some time with us learning about Noel and Gertie: their laughs, their lives, and their loves in Blighty, Broadway and Beyond!
A Gin Palace Production
A Christmas Carol
Charles Dicken’s classic Ghost Story for Christmas.
It’s Christmas Eve but the cold-hearted Scrooge hasn’t an ounce of festive cheer. As the cold night draws in, four ghostly spirits take Ebenezer on a magical journey through his past, his present and his future, hoping to show him the error of his ways. With Christmas spirit, fun, music and magic at its heart, this timeless Charles Dickens tale is brought vividly to life in full Victorian splendour.
Sophie Reid: 280 Days
Sophie Reid is in the process of producing her first album 280Days, a concept/visual album combining song and spoken word and which takes inspiration from the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades. You are invited to hear extracts from this album along with performances from other songwriters and spoken word artists whose work reflects the themes of 280Days: Light in the dark, rebirth, prochoice and the unexpected hope and joy that can be found in those darker nights of the soul AKA The Underworld...
NOTE: This event is subject to Sophie Reid’s availability.
The Thrill of Love
A hostess in the West End ‘gentlemen’s clubs’, Ruth Ellis works hard, plays hard and dreams of a movie-star life. Yet in 1955, the self-styled ‘blonde bombshell’ is convicted of murder and becomes the last woman to be hanged in Great Britain. Ruth’s crime is re-examined in the light of the society she lived in and the experiences that led to her shooting her lover. Through the eyes of film noir Detective Inspector Gale – and the haunting voice of Billie Holiday – The Thrill of Love explores the enigma of Ruth Ellis: a woman whose short but explosive life still resonates.
Comment is Free & The River
Comment is Free
A journalist forms the centre of a devastating media storm in this urgent, gripping and innovative play. A fiercely current, socially relevant and dramatic depiction of free speech and mob mentality. A skillfully crafted cacophony of voices, the script uses social media as a powerful and contemporary means of comment.
The River
A story of a man, obsessed by trout fishing, who takes his girlfriend to his cabin for a holiday to declare his love for her, but it soon becomes apparent she isn’t the first woman he has done this with. A curious play questioning true love, loneliness and isolation.
