About the Play

Set in the 1970s, Doris and Doreen work in an obscure department of an organisation.  It remains unclear what they are employed to do.  They fill what spare time they have (which would appear to be quite a lot!) with coffee, biscuits, reading the paper, chatting, flirting with colleagues and pursuing a feud with Personnel. However, things seem to be changing. Their job security is now in question…….. 

A beautifully observed play by Alan Bennett about working life, the status we derive from work and the vulnerability the worker can feel, written with wit and insight.

Characters

Doreen - Middle aged, lacking in ambition, slightly complacent. Smartly dressed, but non-descript. 50-60.

Doris - Middle aged, more engaged with her work, somewhat caustic and a little brighter than Doreen.  Again, a little non-descript.  50-60

Mr Lomax - Friendly, likes to have a chat and give advice. Self-important.  Only has one arm. 45-60

BLT actively encourages auditionees from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and any of the above parts could be played by any race.

The BLT Committee has decided that all those attending auditions will be required to provide evidence that they are double vaccinated before they enter the building – either from the NHS app, or the card which was issued to them at the Vaccination Centre. This will also include production directors and crew members.
